50 years on, what history is learnt at school?
For a case study on the memory of the April Revolution
Abstract
This case study analysed activities carried out in a school context in a Portuguese municipality to mark the 50th anniversary of the April Revolution, with the aim of understanding pedagogical strategies and their formative purposes. The public institutions analysed integrated the celebrations into their annual activity plans, involving students from different educational levels and the wider community. The various activities were geared towards raising awareness of a foundational episode in Portuguese democracy. Its relevance to the formation of conscious citizenship was emphasised, but the incentive for more insurgent or transformative collective participation was absent.
