Submission Preparation Checklist 

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

ARTICLES /BOOKS REVIEW

1. Authors should:

a) Specify the section to which the texts should be submitted:

i) Thematic dossier

ii) Other Studies

iii) Books reviews

b) Submit on the website http://ojs.letras.up.pt/index.php/historia/about/submissions#onlineSubmissions

 

First step 1. register on the platform  https://ojs.letras.up.pt/index.php/historia/user/register

- "Register as" and choose all (the 3) options: Author; Reader; Reviewer;

- Once registered, log into your own profile;

- Click on "Make a submission";

 

Step 2. Transfer of the manuscript: after choosing the file, click on transfer to save your article on the platform – ATTENTION, NEVER PUT YOUR NAME OR GIVE ANY INDICATION IN THE TEXT THAT IDENTIFIES YOU AS THE AUTHOR;

 

Step 3. Submission Metadata (author name):

- in case of article submission: indicate your name only with the initials in capital letters: ex. Rui Silva; as well as in the title of the article ex. The monasteries of the diocese of Porto (11th century)

- in case of a book review, in the title field, indicate only the work OBJECT OF THE RECENSION, in this form ex. MACEDO, Jorge Borges de (1989), The economic situation in the time of Pombal. Some aspects, Lisbon, Gradiva. ISBN 9789726621263, 254 pp.

 

Step 4. Submission Metadata (abstract and title):

- in the Abstract field, insert the 4 abstracts in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish, which must also include the titles in the respective languages, as well as the keywords.

- indicate the complete title of the text in Portuguese, French, Spanish and English

 

2. Articles must:

2.1 Have an extension not exceeding 50,000 characters (with spaces), including footnotes, bibliographical references, annexes and illustrations and it must be written in one of the following languages: Portuguese, French, English or Spanish.

2.2 Be accompanied by four abstracts, in Portuguese, French, Spanish and English (with a maximum of 700 characters - including spaces) and up to four keywords in the same languages.

2.3 Be written on A4 pages, all numbered, 1.5 spacing between lines, font Times New Roman and font 12, in Word for Windows or compatible format, without adding spacing before or after the paragraphs. The margins should be:

  • top and bottom: 2.5 cm
  • left and right: 3 cm
  • paragraphs with indentation on the first line: 1 cm

2.4 Contain a clear indication of where to insert tables, graphs, figures and photographs in the text.

2.5 Tables, graphs, figures and photographs to be included must be numbered continuously and cannot be wider than the body of the text.

2.6 These elements must be identified with the respective titles and fonts, that must be written in font 11 and spacing 1.15.

2.7 The inclusion of iconographic documentation provided by the author must be accompanied with the previously necessary authorization for its reproduction and publication.

2.8 Footnotes, in numerical order, must be written with the font 10 and spacing of 1.15.

2.9 If a footnote is next to a period or a comma, the number must appear before these punctuation marks.

 

3. Book reviews must be preceded by the complete reference of the work and must not exceed 8,000 characters, including spaces

4. Quotations and bibliographic references:

4.1. Quotations shall be included in the body of the text, according to the following example:

- Only one author - (Ribeiro, 2016)

- Only one author with an indication of the page - (Ribeiro, 2016: 344)

- Two authors - (Rosas & Mariz, 2008: 350)

- Several authors - (Pereira et al., 2010)

- Author mentioned in the text itself - Silva (2008)

Quotations of texts must be integrated in the body of the text, in curved quotation marks and without italics. In case the citations have more than three lines, they must be written in type 11, with single spacing, left indentation of 1.25 cm and indentation of the first line of 1 cm, between the curved quotation marks and without italics.

4.2. References must be placed at the end of the text and alphabetically ordered by the author's last name. If there is more than one reference with the same authorship, they must be sorted from the oldest to the most recent.

a) Book with an author:

b) Book with more than one author:

c) Book with more than four authors:

d) Chapter in book:

MAGALHÃES, Joaquim Romero de (1993), “The framing of the national space” in José Mattoso (edit.), História de Portugal. III Vol., At the dawn of Modernity (1480-1620), Lisbon, Editorial Estampa, pp. 13-60.

e) Article in periodical journal:

f) Article published online:

k) Document citations:

Documentary citations must include all the elements necessary for a rigorous identification of the species, using abbreviations or acronyms after the first complete reference.

The indication of the documentary funds must be made in italics.

Ex. Torre do Tombo National Archive (ANTT), Chancellery D. Afonso V, lv. 15, page 89.

 

5. Authors must comply with the Orthographic Agreement for the Portuguese Language, in force since January 1, 2009. When citing texts produced before the aforementioned agreement, the original spelling must be respected.

6. The authors grant to the Journal of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto - História the exclusive right to publish their texts, in any support, including their reproduction and sale in paper or digital format, as well as their availability under a regime of free access in databases
