The 18th century project of the Royal Palace of Ajuda
two architectural drawings
Abstract
The Royal Palace of Ajuda, one of the main Portuguese royal residences during the 19th century, has a complex and long construction history, only recently completed, in 2021.
Little is known about the palace’s original 18th century project, designed by the Portuguese baroque architect Manuel Caetano de Sousa. However, the contact in 2022, in a Portuguese archive, with two elevations of the Royal Palace of Ajuda depicting a language far removed from the neoclassical that would mark the work of the palace after 1802, plants the possibility of being faced with two of the missing drawings of Manuel Caetano de Sousa, made in the last years of the 18th century.
