Abstract

The paper reflects on some of the premodern protection instruments against dangers, apprehended as protoforms of insurance technology. Knowing that the insufficiency of these instruments to cover the daily risks incurred by individuals, created the need to devise new ways to protect resources, we problematize the role played by maritime insurance, seeking to capture (i) the regulatory norms to which they were subject, (ii) the traits that brought them closer to/distant from other instruments used for risk sharing and (iii) the criteria gradually used to evaluate the price to be paid for the risks experienced.
