The Notaries Public in Cortes and the writing of power: men and texts (14th and 15th centuries)

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the notary public and medieval Cortes, specifically to issues involving the articulation of central and local powers. Through the analysis of men and texts, we will try to understand, (1) who were the notaries public present in Cortes, (2) how communication between powers was established, showing some examples of the circulation of royal charters in the region of Entre-Douro-e-Minho, (3) some cases relating to complaints in Cortes about the payment of the pension – tax that these officials were required to pay annually.
