Abstract

The present article aims to understand the construction of fear in the cinematic genre of horror, acknowledging that the feelings provoked by this genre are influenced by historical and social context. Recognizing that the feeling of fear is highly complex, the starting question "What provokes fear?" reveals the complexity of human beings, their feelings, and how these are deeply intertwined with a broader context influenced by culture, society, and politics. Through extensive bibliographic and filmographic research, we seek to understand the viewer-work relationship and the tools used to evoke feelings of anguish, distress, and fear. We investigate various ways to provoke fear and how it is related to both individual and collective issues simultaneously, as well as to objective reality and the subjectivity of human beings. These dichotomies make fear a multidimensional feeling.
