an exploratory study in Portuguese municipal archives

Municipal archives are among the memory institutions that can best contribute to the achievement of Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities of the United Nations 2030 Agenda list of Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to the informed and critical participation of citizens in collective life. The aim of this article is to assess the practice of Portuguese municipal archives in promoting citizen participation. Based on a review of the literature and a survey sent to the eighteen municipal archives in the district capitals, as well as other municipal archives in the district, it is concluded that citizen participation is not, yet an instrument frequently developed by Portuguese archives, although some already have initiatives aimed at the direct participation of citizens.
