The work contexts, roles and competencies of information professionals, traditionally identified as librarians, archivists and documentalists, are being deeply reconfigured by Information and Communication Technologies. Therefore, new approaches to train these professionals are required, particularly in higher education. This paper presents project-based learning as a way to introduce innovative teaching methodologies in Information Science education. Based on a literature review on project-based learning and Information Science education, a pedagogical experience carried out in an Information Science undergraduate program is presented. The planning and implementation strategies, using digital tools, of a project-based learning experience in a curricular unit are described, with a critical analysis of the process and the results obtained. Results show that this teaching-learning approach promotes a harmonious integration of theory and practice, favouring student motivation and the development of technical and transversal competencies. The work contributes to the reflection on didactic methodologies in Information Science and may guide future pedagogical experiences in this area.
