Abstract

A well-know playwright and novelist, Michel Tremblay is also a prolific translator and adaptator of theatre plays. Yet there are very few studies devoted to this aspect of his work which so far encompasses almost thirty adaptations and translations of plays, mostly from the United States. This article sets out to show that these practices are to be understood within a dynamic perspective that sees the progressive replacement of ideology by pragmatic considerations. Our study will focus on various adaptations of French plays as they illustrate the very complexity of the adaptation process as performed by Michel Tremblay.
