THE RIGHT TO DREAM
BETWEEN STORYTELLING AND SOCIAL

One of the objectives of volunteer storytellers in southern Brazil is to restore the right to dream to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. They come together in an association called Casa do Contador de Histórias, which integrates the Storytelling revival and Third sector movements into its practice. This article examines the motivations of this group, which seeks, through the narration of tales and legends, to promote the self-fulfillment of individuals and encourage them to participate as protagonists in the process of transforming their lives and social structures. In a broader sense, their committed narrative practice aims to “change the world”, which in practice translates into a desire to improve relations between people in contemporary Brazilian society. However, what is more evident in an initial analysis is that the result of this narrator’s work is revealed most concretely in transformations linked to his own way of seeing his world, to his hope and confidence in his ability to fight for his desires
