Abstract

The history of animals in Mozambique is in its infancy, and cattle have been more studied than equids. And yet, zebras were hunted from early times. Domesticated equids arrived at first by sea, and then by land. Although vulnerable to disease, they played a part in Mozambique’s military and civilian history in colonial times. Today, zebras and horses attract tourists, while donkeys serve mainly for transport.
