APPLICATION OF PANOFSKY'S ICONOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS TO FICTION BOOK COVERS IN THE ARMADILLO SYSTEM

Abstract

Increasingly, images, whether photographs, drawings, sculptures or others, play an important role in society, whether in the scientific, literary or everyday life fields. The use of images is frequent in book covers and other documents, as they tend to represent the contents, aspects which, if considered, can help in the indexical representation of information items’ themes. The aim of this research is to analyze four widely known literary fiction covers at the iconographic level, in order to identify elements that may represent the contents of the respective books. Methodology: applied, exploratory and qualitative research, based on Erwin Panofsky's iconographic analysis, using Armadillo photo software, which enables semi-automatic, natural or controlled image analysis. Results: metadata for retrieving the books analyzed and the construction of a thesaurus based on these elements, confirming the relationship between cover and content, sign and context.

Mestrado em Ciência da Informação pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1989). Pós-Doutorado em Filosofia-Tratamento cognitivo da informação-Laboratoire de lAnalyse Cognitive de lInformation (LANCI)- Université du Quebec à Montreal- (2006). Estágio Pós- Doutoral no Instituto de Linguistica Aplicada (IULA) - Universidad Pompeu Fabra- Barcelona. Estágio Pós-Doutoral em Direito e Genoma na Cátedra Interuniversitária de Derecho y Genoma Humano- Universidad de Deusto- País Basco (2013).

Hélio Márcio Pajeú, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE)

É ator, escritor, bailarino aposentado e professor. Possui pós-doutorado em Estudos Teatrais pelo Institut de Recherche en Etudes Théâtrales (IRET) da Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris III, Paris na França (2023-2024). Possui doutorado (2014) e mestrado (2011) em Linguística pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos na linha de pesquisa Linguagem e Discurso. Graduado em Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (2008). É professor Adjunto do Departamento de Ciência da Informação (DIC) do Centro de Artes e Comunicação (CAC) da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), na área de Mediação da Informação e da Cultura. É membro do Alaye - Grupo de estudos e pesquisas em informação antirracista e sujeitos informacionais. Desenvolve pesquisas na área de Teoria e Análise Linguística e da Informação, com ênfase nos Estudos Bakhtinianos, Leitura, Literatura, Autoria, Cultura Popular e Pedagogia do Teatro. É professor colaborador do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Ocupou o cargo de Diretor de Cultura da Pró-Reitoria de Extensão e Cultura (PROExC) e atualmente é Diretor de Patrimônio, Memória e Ações Artístico Culturais da Superintendência de Cultura (SuperCult) da UFPE. É discente matriculado no curso de Licenciatura em Teatro da UFPE.
