Abstract

This study examines the reception of Victor Segalen’s work and life by Michel Onfray. In this sense, we look at his book published by Gallimard in 2017: Le désir ultramarin, les Marquises après les Marquises. Through the analysis of a few passages from the book, we try to show how Onfray proposes a new reading of Segalen’s work. Onfray’s originality is to have the opportunity, as a philosopher, to take the reflection on the traveller’s theoretical and literary work a little further than others do, and to clearly demonstrate the affinities between Segalen and Nietzsche.
